Reviewing discovered devices
After a scan runs, the devices it finds are added to your inventory. This article covers checking the results and what to do next.
Reading scan results
In the Recent Scans list, each completed scan shows a summary — how many devices were found, how many were new, and how many were updated. Select a scan to see its detail and log, which record what the scan did.
- New devices are ones JOATOS hadn't seen before, now added.
- Updated devices already existed and had their details refreshed.
Where discovered devices go
New devices appear in your Devices inventory. From there you can:
- Confirm or change each device's type (switch, router, firewall, and so on) — see Understanding device types.
- Assign a scanning profile and ICMP profile so ongoing monitoring collects stats and up/down status.
- Link a device to an asset record.
Tidying up
Discovery is deliberately broad — a subnet sweep may turn up hosts you don't want to monitor. Review the new devices and remove or reclassify any that don't belong, so your inventory stays meaningful.
Notes & tips
- Set each discovered device's type early — it determines which tabs and data JOATOS collects.
- Re-running the source keeps existing devices updated in place, so your first cleanup pass isn't undone by the next scan.
