Linking a device to an asset
↩ Devices
Linking a device to an asset record connects what's on the network to what's in your asset register — purchase date, warranty, contracts, and licenses. A device links to one asset, and an asset links to one device or server.
Where linking is managed
Linking is done entirely from the device side, on the device's Overview tab. The asset page shows the linked device as read-only — there are no link controls there.
Linking a device
- Open the device and go to the Overview tab.
- In the Asset Record card (which shows No asset record linked), select Link Asset.
- In the search box, type a make, model, asset tag, or serial number. Only assets not already linked to another device or server appear.
- Select the matching asset. The link is saved immediately.
You can't create a new asset from this dialog. If the asset doesn't exist yet, add it first — see Adding an asset.
What you see once linked
The Overview card then summarises the asset:
- Make / model and asset tag
- Status badge
- Warranty expiry — highlighted if expired or within 90 days
- Last maintained date
- Counts of linked contracts and licenses
- A View Asset link to the full asset page
Unlinking
Select Unlink on the asset card. This clears the link only — neither the device nor the asset record is deleted.
Notes & tips
- Linking is most useful for equipment you track for warranty and lifecycle — UPSs, switches, routers, firewalls, and access points.
- Serial numbers help: a device's serial can match it to the right asset quickly in the search.
